THE SEA IMAGE IN UKRAINIAN POETRY AND ITS ENGLISH TRANSLATIONS

The article deals with the issue of sea image reproduction in English poetic translations of Ukrainian poetry. Based on the comparative analysis of parallel texts, the study reveals linguistic and stylistic forms of sea image, its meanings and functions, elucidates the translation techniques used for reproducing marine images, defines translation transformations. Literary approach is applied in order to describe the author’s poetic manner and its transfer into translation, artistic expressive and figurative means in the image structure and their reflection in poetic translation. Cultural approach in the translation study of recreating the sea image in poetic translation allows to define the role of the sea as the symbol of the country and to compare its value in the field of experience of source and target cultures, to explain peculiarities of its artistic embodiment in poetic translation as well as correlation of ethno-cultural realia and symbol. The offered theme is researched insufficiently in translation studies and it features originality. The sea image in source texts and their translations has both ethno-cultural and universal characteristics. The ethno-cultural peculiarity of the sea image is in its ability to be the symbol of homeland, the symbol of state and its borders, the venue of historic events. The sea image acquires some exotic features in reproducing its ethno-cultural specifics as the result of value element loss, narrowing associative sphere, lowering perception level. Universal aesthetic features of marine images include the characters of ancient mythology and world literature, the feature to be the background for lyric experiences, the venue of actions and dramatic events; to be used in the form of comparison, epithet, metaphor on the micro-image level and macroimage level as well. The most common translation techniques are calque, paraphrase, contextual interpretation, stylistic analogy. Transformations include partial lowering of emotional expression and partial reduction of ethno-cultural specifics, unfolding microimage patterns aimed at content explication. The balance of ethno-cultural and universal components of the sea image reproduction in English translations of Ukrainian poetry contributes to the harmony of source and target cultures’ world pictures in the aspect of artistic cross-cultural communication.
