In our article problems connecting with history of genre theological polemic treatise in Ukrainian literature by second half XVII – XVIII cc., in particular, polemic between orthodox and catholic authors are discussed. There are determined character of stylistic features, especially philological arguments, and main direction of orthodox and catholic polemic that time. In our article also the genre of theological treatise in Ukrainian baroque is determined. The main topics are Filioque, Ferrara-Florence Cathedral, Purgatory. The object of the study is Polish-language treatises by Ioanikii Galyatovsky «Stary Kościoł zachodni…» («Old Church of the West..») and Theophyll Rutka «Budynek Chrystusow to iest Kościoł…» («The building of Christs is the Church»), «Goliat swoim mieczem porazony…», «Chorągiew zgody y pokoiu…» («Goliath with his sword devoured ...»), «Herby, abo znaki kościoła prawdziwego…» («Herby, for signs of the real church ...») Ukrainian Orthodox authors who had worked in the second half of the 17th in the beginning of the18 th century, almost did not write about our polemical treatises of the late 17th and early 18th centuries. The main reason that emotions dominated those texts, but facts were often falsified. However, there were exceptions. This can be traced back to the theological and polemical treatises by Ioanykii Galyatovsky and Theophіll Rutka. Theophill Rutka mainly rehearses all the criticisms that had been expressed already by the representatives of the western church. He says that the Ukrainian theological and polemical treatises by Orthodox writers of the early Baroque age are characterized by a lack of balanced argumentation, that are full of oath, inaccurate quotations from the Holy Scripture and former theologians, groundless accusations against the opponents. Ioanykii Galyatovsky denies Theophil Rutka’s arguments. The authors refer to theological treatises by Stefan Zyzaniy, Meletiy Smotrytsky, Petro Mohyla, Ipatij Potiy, Lev Krevsa Theophyll Rutka makes Melety Smotrytsky’s life the main argument, he interprets it as an example of a movement for true faith. The works by Petro Mohyla are the subject of the most serious discussion.
