Franko`s description of polemic against Judaism in Tlumachna Paleia

Among the ancient cosmogonic texts, Tlumachna Paleia occupies a special place. An explicit polemical character distinguishes this monument among similar texts. The researchers of the XIX–XX centuries as well as modern ones (for example Vladimir Milkov) suggest that the author/compiler of Tlumachna Paleia was from Kyivan Rus. I. Franko says that the author could be a priest from Greece. In our study, we analyze the polemic against Judaism in the text of Tlumachna Paleia and I. Franko`s interpretation of this problem. I. Franko highly appreciates this monument because of numerous apocrypha, which he collected for his famous work “Apocrypha and legends from Ukrainian manuscripts”. However, I. Franko is very cautious in naming the place and especially the time of the creation of Tlumachna Paleia. The analysis of the main concepts in the text of Tlumachna Paleia can give a certain insight into where and when it could appear. Since the polemic concerns mainly Judaism (Tlumachna Paleia also contains anti-Muslim and anti-pagan statements), we are researching this aspect. I. Franko notices that this polemic was not radical or fanatical. Tlumachna Paleia contains the main sum of the anti-Judaism polemic in conditional Kyivan period. In our work, we analyze these polemical theses and conclude that these instructions, interpretations and even more severe attacks against Judaism could not express the extreme situation in religious life. I. Franko says that this polemic might have just a literary character. Lack of the facts about the Jewish movement in XIII century appeared to be the weakest point in the concept of Vasilii Istrin (main reviewer of I. Franko's collection of apocrypha) concerning the time of the creation of Tlumachna Paleia. To determine whether Tlumachna Paleia was written/compiled in Kyivan Rus the further researches are needed as well as new historical approvals of religious situation of that period. Our work confirms I. Franko`s statement about nonviolence in the polemic against Judaism.
