Aesthetic accents in the mythopoetics of the diaries of Halyna Pahutiak and Tonino Guerra

The purpose of the paper is to find out aesthetic accents in the mythopoetics of H. Pahutiak’s and T. Guerra’s diaries and establish typological resemblances in the writers’ works. The topicality of the research is explained by the lack of the papers devoted to examining the prose of both authors in a comparative aspect. The study pays attention to explicating and implicating aesthetic phenomena in H. Pahutiak’s and T. Guerra’s diaries, vividly manifesting typological parallels. Firstly it accentuates the resemblance at the genre level: the diary notes allow concentrating the spiritual autobiographical experiences of the authors “inclined to voluntary exile”. The paper highlights the biographical parallels consisting in the choice of the places for solitude: both artists prefer the territories possessing “hermeticism” and the attributes of paradise topoi. It stresses that the aesthetic categories of beauty and ugliness are identical to the mythological opposition of natural and artificial in H. Pahutiak’s and T. Guerra’s diaries, they oppose nature and civilization, and see a threat for being authentic in the present progress. The research establishes that H. Pahutiak’s and T. Guerra’s values have an oriental vector: both artists consider Eastern culture to be a pattern of the Universal harmony and admire Sei Shonagon’s works. Typological parallels are evident in the writers’ considering nature phenomena to be the objects with immanent aesthetic value: their diaries concentrate the observations of the environment which reflect the understanding of spiritual states as the embodiment of natural cycles that is inherent to mythical thinking. There are also analogies in H. Pahutiak’s and T. Guerra’s diaries at the imagery level, namely, the image of a garden is recurring in the literary prose of the Ukrainian writer and it acquires the value of a mythopoetic symbol, and in the diaries of the Italian artist it reflects his interest to arranging “The Garden of forgotten fruit” in Pennabilli. This allows the conclusion that H. Pahutiak’s and T. Guerra’s diaries manifest the similarity of their aesthetic tastes, values and ideals, and also typological resemblances at genre, thematic and imagery levels.
