The article is devoted to the linguistic analysis of maritime English commands in the context of safety of navigation, focusing on their syntactic structure, communicative type and peculiarities of use in emergency situations, including grounding. The objective of our investigation is to establish share of commands differing in their structural and communicative characteristics and to find out specifics of their implementation on commercial and passenger ships. The methods used in the research included a method of syntactic modelling, the surface structure analysis, as well as qualitative and quantitative approach and contextual interpretation. The results show that imperative commands with the elliptical structure prevail on the merchant ships, which ensure the effectiveness of giving orders within the restricted time limit. At the same time, declarative notifications with a complete structure prevail on passenger ships due to the fact following from the necessity to give accurate information to the passengers and prevent panic. It was also found out that expressions of politeness and general softening of commands grants psychological balancy of the passengers. The article also focuses on the differences between standardized SMCP phrases and actual speech practice. The established regularity owes human factors and the informal situation on board. The results obtained testify the importance of maintaining formal standards in critical situations and indicate the perspective of further improvement of maritime communication in line with technolohical progress.
