SPACE TERMINOLOGY IN MODERN JAPANESE LANGUAGE AS A TRANSLATION PROBLEM

Abstract

The article discusses problematic issues and peculiarities of space terminology in Ukrainian translation, which is part of scientific and technical discourse, using examples from the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) “Scenario2021” materials. A number of terms were selected that are of particular interest for translation and that reflect the current direction of space technology development. The research was conducted through the prism of translation strategies and using various translation techniques. Particular attention was paid to terms that did not have established equivalents and were distinguished by their polysemy, semantic, or cultural specificity.It was found that such complex terminology is formed by combining various components: borrowings from English, katakana, and kanji. This combination led to the emergence of hybrid phrases that are difficult to reproduce in Ukrainian through descriptive translation alone. The study found that the optimal solution was to use a combination of descriptive translation techniques and partial calquing with terminological adaptation in order to preserve the original meaning.The conclusion demonstrated that when working with space terminology, translators must not only adhere to the rules of appropriate and understandable translation, but also sometimes act as active creators of new terms. The results of the study are applicable to the niche of scientific and technical translation and can serve as a catalyst for Ukraine’s further development in this field.
