THE ONYMICAL SPACE IN SOFIA ANDRUKHOVYCH’S NOVEL “KATANANJE”

Abstract

The article examines the onymical space of Sofia Andrukhovych’s novel “Katananje”, which is an important element of the work’s artistic structure. Onomastic vocabulary in the text serves as a kind of reference point, organizing the spatial and temporal coordinates of the work. Proper names activate the connections between time and space in the artistic narrative, which makes them important for structuring the plot line and the interconnectedness of text components. The writer creates an artistic model of the world, where the boundaries of time and space are determined in accordance with the author’s intention and are transmitted not only through descriptive vocabulary, but also through a system of proper names. It is proven that proper names perform not only nominative, but also symbolic, expressive and intertextual functions. The anthroponyms of the novel have by a high level of semantic load, reflecting the deep character traits of the work’s characters and emphasizing their role in the plot. The toponymy of the work is based on urban realities, which creates the effect of documentary accuracy and immerses the reader in the atmosphere of a modern metropolis. Kyiv as a place of action appears not just as a background, but as an important component of the plot. Mythological and symbolic onyms form a deeper layer of semantics, which complements the general concept of the work. The functionality of proper names in the text is manifested in their ability to serve as means of interpreting events, identifying characters and space, as well as creating additional connotations. The names of characters and geographical names form the fictional world of the novel, help to reveal the characters of the heroes, as well as give the text additional depth. It was analyzed how proper names form semantic accents and expand the interpretative possibilities of the text. The role of onyms in creating national and cultural identity, as well as in building a narrative space, is determined.
