LEXICO-SEMANTIC VERSIONS OF THE LEXEME “CITY” IN THE UKRAINIAN LANGUAGE

Abstract

The article is devoted to the study of lexical-semantic variants of the lexeme “city” in the Ukrainian language. Definitions of the terms “lexeme”, “lexical-semantic field”, “lexical-semantic variant”, “sema” are provided. The integral schema of the lexical-semantic field “city” has been clarified. Based on the analysis of dictionary definitions, seven main meanings of the lexeme “city” are singled out: a large settlement, city residents (as a metonymic entity); administrative center; industrial center; shopping center; cultural center; locality; the place where the bazaar takes place. A circle of lexemes that are as close as possible in terms of paradigmatic characteristics and united within the lexicalsemantic variants of the lexeme “city” is outlined. The nuclear seven “locality”, “locality / part of the city”, “dwelling / premises / building / house”, “population / residents / residents / representatives of the city”, “locality” within the lexical-semantic variant “Large settlement” are recorded, residents of the city (as a metonymic entity). The core seven “institution / organization / enterprise”, “personsmanagers / administration / bodies”, “administrative-territorial unit / district / street / square”, “character of settlement / size of settlement” within the lexical-semantic variant “Administrative center” are distinguished. Prospects for further research within this topic are identified.
