FUNCTIONAL PARAMETERS OF SYNTACTIC EXPRESSIVES IN MAX KIDRUK’S NOVEL “COLONY”

Abstract

The proposed article examines the syntactic means of expressiveness in Max Kidruk’s novel “Colony”. It is proven that the analysis of expressives within the anthropocentric paradigm of modern linguistics makes it possible to trace the features of an individual author’s style and to reveal the ways of realizing the pragmatic potential of literary discourse. Expressiveness in the artistic text is also defined as a mean of conveying subjective attitude, creating emotional tension and immersing the recipient in the plot. The focus of the analysis is on syntactic expressives, which concentrate the expressive potential of language units and create the expressive dimension of a discourse.A review of theoretical approaches to the definition of expressiveness and its role in the forming both an individual and collective world view is carried out.The aim of the study is defined as a comprehensive analysis of the functional parameters of syntactic expressives in the novel “Colony”. Relevant factual material is collected through the method of continuous sampling, while descriptive, inductive, contextual and distributional analyses make it possible to determine the communicative significance of expressive constructions. It is clarified that the most productive means in the novel are parcellation, amplification, tautology, fragmentary sentences, interrogative and exclamatory sentences, as well as free direct speech. It is shown that these means not only contribute to the modeling of the internal state of the characters, but also enhance narrative dynamics and create an atmosphere of tension.The results of the study demonstrate that the usage of syntactic expressives in the novel “Colony” is systemic in nature and contributes to the implementation of the main tasks of literary discourse: intensification of meanings, emotional expression and enhancement of communicative effectiveness.The obtained conclusions expand the understanding of expressive syntax and open up prospects for further studies in the field of linguistic and pragmatic stylistics.
