THE PHENOMENON OF SYNONYMY AS A RESOURCE MATERIAL OF MODERN LINGUISTIC RESEARCH

The paper examines the current state of affairs in the study of the phenomenon of synonymy and the formation of synonymous series on the material of lexemes of a certain semantic class or lexical and semantic group in related and unrelated languages, which is widespread at the present stage of linguistic progress by Ukrainian and foreign scientists. The specificity of comparative research in Ukraine and abroad is noted and the subject of modern comparative research within close and distant languages is traced. The study presents an analysis of the concepts of “synonym” and “synonymy”, “absolute synonym” and “partial synonym”, “synonymous series” and “synonymous nest” together with the concept of a dominant lexeme. The difference between ideographic, stylistic, distributive and doublet synonyms is traced. The common and distinctive features of the concepts of “parallel form”, “doublet” and “variant” are determined. The study also identifies the main types of synonyms according to different classifications and characterizes the main types of relationships between lexemes that have a similar meaning. The study examines modern studies on the subject of modeling synonymous series with the specifics of isolating the dominant of a synonymous series within a particular semantic class of words on the material of the Ukrainian, English and German languages, based on works of fiction and materials of journalistic and scientific styles. Prospects for further research are identified within the framework of detailed isolation and lexical and semantic analysis of synonymous series of rational nouns, rational verbs, rational adjectives and rational adverbs within the semantic class of rational vocabulary to denote a logical, reasoned way of perceiving the world by a person in the Ukrainian, English and German languages in a comparative aspect with the search for the corresponding dominant (the most neutral lexeme) for each synonymous series and taking into account the absolute frequency of use of words that are synonyms.
