SPECIFIC LANGUAGE FEATURES OF THE UKRAINIAN DIASPORA PERIODICALS IN THE USA: ORTHOGRAPHIC NORMS

Abstract

The Ukrainian diaspora periodicals in the United States of America are one of the main tools for preserving national identity. For many decades, Ukrainian magazines in the USA have created a unique linguistic environment that testified to the development and functioning of the Ukrainian language outside mainland Ukraine and supported the continuity of the linguistic tradition. The relevance of the research is due to the need to study the linguistic model, with the help of which the diaspora press reflects the dynamics of interaction of Ukrainians around the world in general and in the USA in particular. The purpose of the proposed article is to analyze the features of the linguistic organization of publications in Ukrainian periodicals in the USA. The outlined goal involves identifying specific features at the orthographic and grammatical (in connection with orthography) levels, as well as clarifying the role of the diaspora press as a tool for preserving authentic language norms in conditions of a long-term foreign-language environment. The object of scientific study is the texts of Ukrainian periodicals in the USA of different waves of emigration, and the subject is the peculiarities of their orthographic reproduction. The observations made in the work indicate that Ukrainian diaspora newspapers and magazines in the USA, created at different times, were not homogeneous in terms of linguistic organization. Thus, publications founded at the end of the 20th century or at the beginning of the 21st century retain the features of orthographic and grammatical organization (in connection with orthography), effective in the Ukrainian language since 1993 with a gradual transition to the spelling norms of 2019 (the newspapers “Hromada”, “Chas i Podii”). The periodicals, whose work was initiated at the end of the 19th century and until the first half of the 20th century, maximally preserve and consistently reproduce the features of orthography recorded in the orthography of the Ukrainian language in 1928 and dictionaries printed during this period (the newspaper “Svoboda”, the magazines “Visti Kombatanta”, “Rozbudova Derzhavna”). Such manifestations indicate the preservation of the linguistic tradition, its continuity and progressive logical development, which makes it possible to create a unique linguistic environment in the diaspora and contributes to the strengthening of national selfconsciousness and identity of its representatives.
