Abstract

The publication highlights the peculiarities of the development of authenticism as a trend in Polish poetry during the interwar period. To confirm the developed scientific theses, the author analyses the lyrics of Stefan Szajdak, who lived and worked in Volyn during the studied years. The methodological basis of the study states that in order to make the results more reliable, the contextual analysis of works and literary interpretation were applied. This contributed to a holistic systematisation of the manifestations of authenticism in the poetry of the Ukrainian-Polish borderland, which includes poems by Stefan Szajdak, Czesław Janczarski, Stanisław Czernik, Jan- Bolesław Ożóg, and others. The main media «mouthpiece» of the movement was the journal «Poets’ Neighbourhood», which gathered a significant number of artists. The work draws attention to the theoretical interpretation of the direction, analyzes various descriptions of the term «authenticism», highlights the necessary components of the definition and confirms them in the practical part, during the analysis of Stefan Szajdak's poems. During the analysis, the following main features of authenticism were revealed: unity with the natural world (in Szajdak's poems, these are Volyn landscapes); diving into the layers of local folklore as an attempt to combine it with folk art and village life (this is especially noticeable in the poetry of Jan Boleslaw Ożóg, on the other hand, in Stefan Szajdak's poems, regionalism, despite the love for the «small homeland», has an accidental character); reflecting everyday life and focusing on important real details In conclusion, we can state that the authenticity of each of the poets of the interwar period had an individual manifestation, and authentic poetry occupies a worthy place in the history of literature of the Ukrainian-Polish borderland, which in the poems of Stefan Szajdak can be described as a «Volyn text».
