The article studies the problems of the sound and meaning correlations in a poetic text. Questions of the sound organization of the text belong to the priority areas in modern linguistics and are studied by phono-semantics (works by A.P. Zhuravlev, V.V. Levitsky, S.V. Voronin, L.P. Prokofjeva). Sound symbolism acquires a special role in a poetic text. This paper offers analysis of the semantic potential of a sound in the poetic works of the Russian poet-immigrant Boris Poplavsky (1903-1935) who showed certain interest in surrealist method of writing. Surrealist poetry, which is often an absurd and arbitrary automatic flow of associative images, provides particularly interesting material for the study of the “sound tissue” (R. Jacobson) of the poetic texts due to its dream-like quality and orientation towards the verbalization of the unconscious. Phono-semantics, which also has a subliminal aura (A.P. Zhuravlev), can help in the perception of this rather complex poetry. The paper analyzes the phono-semantic features of the texts in the collection Automatic Verses by Boris Poplavsky and considers the architectonic characteristics of his poetic texts, highlights the “supporting elements” which help in the perception of this poetry, outlines the sound organization of the poems and the acoustic features of the sounds which enhance or modify the meaning of the poetic text. Analysis of the poetry shows that the ratio of sound and meaning can be viewed as an organizing principle for the study of the texts. A significant number of supporting elements in the text help in the perception of surrealist images. Such elements include typical for euphony – assonances, alliteration, onomatopoeic vocabulary, paronomasia, rhymes, repetitions, parallel constructions, as well as different violations of the rhythmic melody of the verse – spondees, lengthening the line with a large number of unstressed syllables. Getting into strong positions, they help the reader to intuitively catch the "underwater" meanings of the poem. Of particular interest are also the acoustic characteristics of sounds in their relationship with the semantic meanings of words, as well as the sound contrasts that poets create to enhance the reader's aesthetic experience.
