EXPRESSIVE STYLISTICS OF AN ACADEMIC TEXT

The paper focuses on the stylistic devices used in academic texts which make them expressive and form the intellectual worldview via imagery. This aspect is little known about the functional style of scientific prose. The applied complex methodology (scholarly observation, stylistic analysis, elements of componential analysis) provided explicating the specifics of various stylistic means in academic texts. Theoretical background has been provided for the contemporary requirement towards the transformation of academic texts. This is caused by the renovated philosophy of world perception and spread of postmodern paradigm. There is an overview of the previous research dealing with the correlation between a concept and an image in academic texts. The paper highlights the use of trite (dead) and genuine tropes, figures of speech, stylistic syntax, world-building etc. The authors illustrate instances of metaphor, epithet, allusion, antithesis, syntactic parallelism, parenthetic constructions, interrogative sentences, stylistic repetition of lingual units of different language levels. The paper is an attempt to prove that expressive stylistics is inevitably penetrating into present-day academic texts, being a contemporary requirement and striving to humanize academic discourse. Imagery of academic texts activates cognitive processes accompanying its understanding and perception of its contents.
