Abstract

Computer games with literary plots are an example of interaction between classics and popular culture. Regency Love videogame based on Jane Austen's novels aims to consume classic text and turn it into a product in the entertainment industry. The game simplifies the content of Austin's works to a single story of courtship and marriage and synthesizes the genres of adventure role-playing, “visual romance” and dating simulator. The game is analyzed in the context of the subculture of the Regency perio fans, as well as the the novelist Jane Austen’s, and the sub-genre of the love story “Regency romance”. The factor in the attractiveness of the game is the resource of interactivity: the gamer at the same time is in the role of the author and as a character of one of the novels. The game “Regency Love” destroys the barrier between the reader and the text, the reader and the author, makes the reader co-creator of the imaginary world, provides the effect of presence and “dissolution” in it.
