Abstract

The article is devoted to a comprehensive study of the theoretical, methodological, and practical aspects of teaching tourism area studies in higher education, which is considered a cornerstone in the training of highly qualified specialists for the dynamically changing and globalized tourism industry. It examines the current challenges facing the higher education system in the field of tourism, namely: the rapid change of tourism trends, the increase in information flow, the need for an interdisciplinary approach to education, the development of digital technologies and their impact on the formation of the tourism product, as well as the growing responsibility of the tourism industry to society and the environment. The structure of area studies competencies, which is a key element in the training of competitive specialists for the tourism industry, is characterized in detail. This structure includes a wide range of knowledge (geographical, historical, cultural, socio-economic, linguistic), as well as practical skills (analytical, communicative, organizational, technological, research). Special emphasis is placed on the development of skills to analyze tourism information, assess the tourism potential of regions, develop tourism products, organize excursions, and provide quality tourism services. Innovative methodological approaches to teaching tourism area studies are proposed, which ensure the active involvement of students in the educational process and develop their practical skills. In particular, problem-based learning, case studies, project-based learning, and simulation modeling are considered as effective tools for the formation of professional competencies. Three models of organizing the educational process are presented: modular, regional, and thematic, which should ensure the flexibility and effectiveness of the educational trajectory. A comprehensive system of criteria and indicators for evaluating the effectiveness of learning is developed, which covers a comprehensive assessment of theoretical training, practical skills, the level of formation of professional competencies (intercultural, communicative, organizational), and personal qualities of students (responsibility, initiative, creativity).
