FUNCTIONAL UNIT OF THE LEXICAL-PHRASEOLOGICAL MINIMUM FOR LAWYERS

Practically all forms of teaching foreign languages in state educational institutions are characterized by a shortage of time, thus impossibility to teach/learn the entire lexis within the existing framework. Problem solution leads to the limitation of the amount of lexis. In this article, authors analyzed the main aspects of the notion of the functional unit of the lexical-phraseological minimum, its typology and structure. From the general linguistics viewpoint, the unit of any language lexical system is a word. Words occupy the tier of semantically valid signs of any language. This gives reason to allocate them to the category of "ready" signs, which help to construct the new ones: word combinations, phrases, etc. Nonetheless, the term "lexical unit" is more suitable as it permits us to incorporate combinations of words and cliched phrases. However, the term "educational lexical unit", or to be more accurate, the educational lexeme-semantic unit, occurs to be the most suitable one. On the basis of the English language lexis analysis, we consider it possible to differentiate five categories of such lexical units. They are: 1) auxiliary/structural (connective grammaticalized) educational lexeme-semantic units; 2) principal conventional educational lexeme-semantic units; 3) terminological/special educational lexeme-semantic units; 4) onomastic educational lexeme- semantic units; 5) cliched sentences. Each category is examined in further detail in our article. Due to the greater fractionality of the suggested unit of the lexical minimum, its quantity parameters will be other than most teachers are ready for. Yet, then we can count on more elaborated detailed dictionary, where all chosen educational lexeme-semantic units will be accurately registered.
