FORMATION OF PATRIOTISM AND NATIONAL IDENTITY OF STUDENTS BY MEANS OF WOOD EMBROIDERY

Abstract

The paper reveals the pedagogical potential of decorative and applied arts, in particular the technique of embroidery on wood, in fostering patriotism and national identity among students. The relevance of the topic is determined by the need to strengthen young people’s civic consciousness, preserve cultural heritage, and transmit traditional values within the contemporary educational space of Ukraine. The study substantiates that embroidery on wood, as an integrated artistic and technological activity, combines the traditions of Ukrainian embroidery and folk woodcraft, forming a holistic perception of national culture. Special attention is paid to the symbolism of ornaments (the Tree of Life, the rhombus, the cross, the infinity symbol), which serve as carriers of historical memory and spiritual values of the people. Through understanding the meaning of these symbols, students not only master the technique of creating decorative items but also engage with the cultural code of the nation. The influence of practical artistic activity on the development of key competencies (cultural, civic, social, technological, emotional and value-based) is analyzed. It has been proven that the process of creating items using the embroidery-on-wood technique contributes to fostering respect for traditions, responsibility for preserving national heritage, development of creative thinking, perseverance and aesthetic taste. It has been concluded that embroidery on wood is an effective means of fostering patriotism, as through personally meaningful creative activity students become aware of their belonging to the Ukrainian people, its history, and cultural heritage. Engaging young people in traditional art strengthens national identity and promotes the development of spirituality and civic engagement in contemporary society.
